Generator Maintenance in North Las Vegas

A standby generator can sit for months and then have to carry the whole house on the hottest day of the year. Regular service is what makes that handoff boring, and in the desert the schedule needs to be tighter than the brochure suggests.

What a service visit covers

  1. Technician in gloves draining and changing the oil on an open standby generator during a maintenance visit on a bright desert morning01

    Oil and filters

Fresh oil, a new oil filter and a clean or new air filter. In the valley, the air filter is the item we find in the worst shape.

  2. Technician testing the starter battery of a home standby generator with a battery tester, the unit's side panel open02

    Battery and plugs

A load test on the starter battery, terminals cleaned and tightened, spark plugs checked or replaced.

  3. Gloved hands holding a dust-clogged generator air filter next to a clean replacement filter over an open engine bay03

    Air, vents and fuel

Intake and enclosure vents cleared of dust and debris, the gas connection checked, and the area around the unit looked over.

Then we run the generator under load through the transfer switch, so we know it can carry the house, not just idle. You get a short written note of what we did and anything that needs watching.

Why desert units need more attention

Heat and dust are the two things that age a generator here. Generac's owner's manual for one of its portable models says to change the oil every month when it runs under heavy load or in high temperatures, and to clean the air filter more often in dirty or dusty conditions. Standby units have their own schedules, but the same physics apply: an engine breathing hot, dusty air needs cleaner oil and a cleaner filter.

Batteries also suffer in the heat, and a standby unit's battery is what has to crank the engine at the moment the power drops. We test it every visit instead of waiting for it to fail.

Monsoon storms bring their own problems: blowing dust packs vents, and wind can pile debris against the enclosure. A quick check after a big storm is cheap compared to a unit that overheats during the next outage.

Plan or one-time visit

Some owners want one service call before summer. Others want us to keep the schedule for them. Either works. On a plan, we track the dates, call you when service is due and keep a record of every visit for the unit.

FAQ·Straight answers

Questions valley homeowners bring up

Short and plain. Call if your setup doesn't fit the usual mold.

01How often should a standby generator be serviced?

At least once a year for most homes, plus a check after any long outage where it ran for a day or more. Read your unit's manual for its exact intervals, and keep the paperwork from each visit.

02When is the best time to schedule?

Spring, before the heat and before monsoon season starts on June 15. A unit serviced in April or May goes into summer with fresh oil, a clean filter and a battery that's been load tested.

03Do you maintain portable generators too?

Yes. Portables need oil changes, carburetor care and fresh fuel just like standby units, and the ones that sit in a hot garage all year benefit most from a check before summer.
